Since February 2026, Lola had been wandering the streets of Granadilla alone. A family tried to help her by contacting government shelters and the police, but nobody came. Eventually, she wandered into another lady’s house, who also contacted the authorities for assistance, again, no one responded. In desperation, she contacted Live PAWS for help.
We were told Lola had some kind of lump, so we immediately admitted her into our care. She arrived exhausted, hungry, and clearly in pain. Yaiza examined her straight away and diagnosed a large mammary tumour. Lola was then referred to Antonio, our vet in San Isidro, who carried out X-rays and thankfully confirmed there was no spread to her lungs.
Further tests revealed that Lola also has filaria, so Antonio first needed to ensure she was fit enough for anaesthetic before beginning treatment for that condition at a later date. She was also diagnosed with hip dysplasia, which will be addressed once she is stronger.
Her surgery was extremely complicated. The tumour was very large, and there were more than two litres of fluid in her abdomen. At the same time, Lola also needed to be sterilised. To help close the large surgical area and prevent the skin from stretching and reopening, a skin graft from her stomach was performed. It was an incredible operation and a huge success.
After surgery, Lola went into foster care with Monika, who has lovingly nursed her back to health with endless kindness, patience, and care. Lola is healing beautifully now. She is enjoying her walks again and absolutely adores Monika.
While under anaesthetic, Lola also received much needed dental treatment, as her teeth were rotten and badly infected.
This dear old lady is at least 10 years old and must once have belonged to someone.
Now fully recovered she is living a wonderful life under the watchful eye of her foster carer Monika.
