In Loving Memory

Live Paws, Arona, Tenerife

It was 2021 when we received a call from the vets asking if we would take you, Agat. We were already full, and it was a real struggle to find you a place. But when we heard your story, we shuffled everything around to make sure you could come to us.

You had been taken to the vets to be euthanised. Why? Because you were no longer wanted.

Thankfully, our vets refused, and you came to us in a terribly neglected state. It was obvious that you had been mistreated and had spent your life chained.

We all fell in love with you the moment you arrived. You responded to us readily, as though you already knew where love was ,and that you were going to receive it in abundance.

Nothing ever seemed to phase you. Even your previous life had not dampened your zest for life. Your tail was always wagging, and you were so happy to finally have the freedom you had been denied for so long.

Your heartworm was treated, and you went to the groomers for a much needed bath and trim. It was wonderful to see you looking and feeling so much better.

Then we noticed that your teeth were deteriorating and that you were having difficulty eating. The sad news was that you had cancer of the mouth.

We did everything we could to keep you comfortable and pain free. You were given pâté to eat, making mealtimes easier for you, and you were surrounded by the care and love you had been missing for so many years.

Then, one morning, we arrived at the shelter as usual, only to find that you had passed away, probably from a heart attack.

We are so sorry that we couldn’t find you your very own home. But somehow, we don’t think you were worried about that.

For once in your life, you were no longer chained. You were safe. You received the love and care you deserved. You had beautiful walks, freedom, and people who adored you. And your tail never stopped wagging.

We will always remember you with great fondness, Agat.

Your memory lives on here at the refuge, where we have created a special remembrance area called Agat’s Side.

You were wanted.
You were loved.
And you will never be forgotten.
