. Princessa and Duque arrived at Live PAWS together and, because of their size, they shared one of our larger back kennels where they lived happily side by side.
Then came New Year’s Day 2021. As we arrived at the refuge that morning, we were met with a sight that will stay with us forever.
Princessa was curled up beside her best friend, Duque, who had tragically passed away after being frightened by fireworks set off close to the refuge. It was utterly heartbreaking.
In the weeks that followed, it was clear Princessa was grieving. She had lost not just a kennel mate, but her best friend.
Then, in April of that same year, everything changed. A family visited the refuge looking for a large dog, and of course, we introduced them to Princessa.
What happened next was beyond anything we could have dreamed of. Princessa didn’t just find her forever home… she found it on a farm in Kenya.
She spent the rest of her days exactly as every rescue dog deserves—running free, splashing through rivers, and sharing adventures with her new best friends, Einstein and Luna. She exchanged kennel life for endless space, love, and freedom.
It was the perfect ending to such a special girl’s story. Today, our hearts are heavy as we say goodbye once again.
Thank you to Princessa’s incredible family for giving her the life she had always deserved. You gave her a chapter filled with love, happiness, and unforgettable memories, and for that we will be forever grateful.
Now we take comfort in imagining Duque waiting patiently for her, tail wagging, ready to welcome his best friend home once again. Run free, our beautiful Princessa.
